Pattern Logic Primer

Reasoning in Pattern

The purpose of capturing knowledge about the world in the form of logical premises is not simply for the purpose of cataloguing but ultimately, to reason over that knowledge so as to derive new insight.

Forms of Reasoning in Pattern Logic

Deduction

Deduction

Deduction

  • terms and copulas have necessary or contingent modality
  • quantifiers have existential import
  • inferences have existential import

Abduction

Deduction

Deduction

  • terms and copulas have possible or impossible modality
  • quantifiers lack existential import
  • inferences lack existential import

Induction

Deduction

Induction

Hybrid reasoning that involves elements of both deductive and abductive forms.

Analogy

Deduction

Induction

Substituting one reasoning form in place of another, or replacing one set of concepts with a different set of concepts within a given form.

Reasoning in the Pattern Logic Syllogistic

Perfect Syllogisms

A pattern logic syllogism will be said to be perfect when both terms and copulas are of a necessary or contingent modality and the pattern spanning the common term permits an elimination of that term on a quantifier having existential import.

Imperfect Syllogisms

A pattern logic syllogism will be said to be imperfect when any of the terms or copulas are not of a necessary or contingent modality or the pattern spanning the common term permits an elimination of that term on a quantifier lacking existential import.

Forms of Reasoning in Syllogisms

  • Reasoning in perfect syllogisms is deduction and it produces certainties.
  • Reasoning in imperfect syllogisms is abduction and it produces hypotheses.
  • Reasoning in both perfect and imperfect syllogisms is induction and it produces theories.
  • Substituting one form of reasoning in place of another is analogy and it produces stories.
